Party Animals Rods & Gear Guide
Your fishing setup is a rod plus four components - a hook, bait, line and reel. Each one changes something specific: which fish you can catch, how fast they bite, and how the reel-in fight goes.
Your fishing setup
A rod holds up to four components, and each slot does one job:

The base of every setup. Its type and weight class decide which fish you can hook at all, and how much other gear you can attach.

Sets how quickly fish bite. Higher-tier hooks shorten the wait between casts.

Shifts the rarity of what you catch and also speeds up bites. See the full bait guide.

During the fight the tension bar creeps up. A better line recovers tension faster, so the fish is less likely to snap free.

Pulls the fish in. A faster reel lands tough fish before they escape. Lure rods must have a reel equipped.
Rod types & weight classes
Light
Lands smaller, lighter fish. Simple rods are Light only.
Heavy
Needed for the biggest, toughest fish - higher-level catches are almost all Heavy.
Every component adds Weight, and the total must stay under the rod's Weight Limit - so you balance a faster hook or stronger reel against the load your rod can carry.
The reel-in fight
Hook a fish and it fights back on a Tension bar. Reel too hard and tension maxes out; wait too long and it escapes. Your Reel Speed pulls it in, while your Line's Tension Recovery keeps the bar from snapping. Tougher fish flee harder - that is where a stronger reel and line pay off.
Every fish page shows its fight difficulty, from Easy to Fierce. It is a property of the species: the same fish pulls just as hard whether it comes up Standard or Legendary.
Rod upgrade path
Rods unlock in order - each step up carries more gear, casts further and catches more species. Reels and lines come in matching sets (the Hawthorn rod pairs with the Hawthorn reel).
